Sh2-308 Emission Nebula in Canis Major

Sh2-308 (Sharpless 308) is an 35´x 35´arcmin. large emission nebula in the constellation of Canis Major, the light source of which is the Wolf-Rayet-Star WR6 (=EZ Can.Maj.) at the top left of our picture.

This star is a very hot and bright one and their is some evidence, that it might explode some day as a supernova.

This star lost a huge gas cloud about 70.000 years ago, which no form this beautiful emission nebula, mainly emitting light in the wavelenght of OxygenIII.The distance from us is about 4500 light-years,but the right value is something uncertain.

Our maximum FOV with the FLI-camaera is a squared 22,5´arcmin.,therefore we only show the brightest part of this bubble here.Sh2-308 is also nicknamed as "Dolphin-Nebula".
