IC 5148 is a beautiful planetary nebula located some 3000 light years away in the constellation Grus. The nebula has an apparent diameter of 2.2 arcmin and it is still rapidly expanding at over 50 kilometres per second. It’s overlapping internal shells can clearly be seen. It is surrounded by a very faint ectended halo barely visible in this image.
It is nicknamed as spare tyre nebula, see also a reference image taken with the 3.6 m NTT telescope in La Silla: http://www.eso.org/public/images/potw1242a/
