NGC 289 is a face-on spiral galaxy in the constellation of Sculptor in a distance of 70 million light-years.
It spans 250 million light-years and shows an active galaxy core with loosely bound faint spiral arms showing signs of gravitational interaction with another smaller elliptical galaxy, visible in the top of the image.
It was discovered on September 27, 1834 by John Herschel.
